About the band — liner notes
Sum ting about us
Two freshmen and a shared playlist
Sumting Blue started in September 2025, when two UCLA freshmen realized they kept queuing up the same songs — Laufey next to Fleetwood Mac, Ella Fitzgerald next to ABBA — and figured a band should sound like that too.
Word spread the way it does on a campus with too many talented people. Singers, horns, strings, and a rhythm section signed on, and within a few months the duo had become an eleven-piece spanning freshmen to graduate students.
We play jazz standards with a pop heart and pop songs with a jazz brain — at UCLA events, local venues, parties, and private events around Los Angeles.

How we got here
2025 — present
01 — September 2025
Two freshmen, one idea
Sumting Blue starts as a two-person project in a UCLA dorm — a shared love of Laufey, old standards, and pop that swings.
02 — Fall 2025
First gig
A campus showcase turns a duo into a band. Friends of friends bring horns, strings, and three voices.
03 — Winter 2026
Eleven strong
The lineup settles at eleven — freshmen through grad students — with a book of songs spanning Ella Fitzgerald to ABBA.
04 — Spring 2026
Around town
UCLA events, local venues, parties, private events. If there's a stage (or a living room), we'll play it.
05 — Today
Booking now
Writing arrangements, adding songs, and looking for the next room to fill. That could be yours.
The whole mission, honestly
“Make the standards feel new, make the hits feel timeless, and make every room feel like a listening party.”
